Those with gluten allergies or intolerance need to be wary in many aspects of our lives (it gets tiring but you get used to it)....one that we do not often think about is in the medications and supplements we take. Gluten is often used as a binder in meds....but determining if gluten is in the medication is tricky as there is no labeling requirement for manufacturers to list gluten ingredients in medications. uggggg !!!
Those of us with gluten issues have learned to be resourceful.... detectives of a sort......
what can we do?
* we can contact the manufacturer and ask about the ingredients.
* one helpful website is glutenfreedrugs.com
* many of the celiac organizations do reference medications on their websites
* the FDA also addresses this topic at:
April of this year, Representative Tim Ryan from Ohio introduced H.R. 2074, the 'Gluten in Medicine Disclosure Act of 2019' to the congressional floor. If passed, this bill would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to require gluten be labeled in all medications. Let's see how long this takes to get any action....
Happy gluten detecting!
